Dental care should never be overlooked, regardless of age. Although tooth loss is often linked to aging, more seniors are retaining their natural teeth today, largely due to maintaining good oral health. Practicing good oral hygiene is beneficial whether you have natural teeth, dental implants, or dentures. Below, we outline some reasons why dental care is crucial for seniors.

Oral Health and Its Impact on Your Overall Well-being

Researchers have discovered a connection between several diseases that can affect the health of seniors. Undiagnosed periodontal disease may raise the risk of heart issues, including heart disease, respiratory disorders, and even stroke.

What Are The Symptoms Of Periodontal Disease?

  • Loose teeth

  • Receding gums

  • Itching, swollen and bleeding gums

  • Shifted teeth

  • Dry mouth

  • Bad breath

Dry Mouth And Senior Citizens

Dry mouth is not just a symptom of periodontal disease; it is also a common and uncomfortable condition among older adults. It can result from medications or medical treatments such as radiation therapy, which is often experienced by cancer patients.

Sensitivity And Senior Citizens

As we grow older, our teeth also age and may become increasingly sensitive. Over time, gums naturally recede, revealing parts of your teeth that lack enamel protection. If you notice tooth sensitivity, consider using a toothpaste designed for sensitivity. If the issue continues, it's important to visit your dentist, as sensitive teeth might indicate more serious problems like cavities or cracked/fractured teeth.

Maintaining Good Oral Health Is About Prevention

The key components of maintaining good oral health are regular teeth maintenance (i.e. regularly visiting the dentist, and regular brushing and flossing).

For additional protection, we recommend the following:

  • Obtain a powered toothbrush with a wide handle that enables brushing at the recommended 45-degree angle.

  • Choose an antimicrobial mouthwash to help prevent and combat periodontal disease.

  • Consider using a water flosser or a single-handle flosser to assist in removing food particles or debris lodged between your teeth.

  • Maintain your dentures by cleaning them twice daily with warm water and brushing them using denture paste.

  • Ensure that you replace your dentures every six to seven years.

  • Monitor any changes in your mouth and be sure to discuss any concerns with your dentist.
