A note on timing
If you are planning veneers or composite bonding, whitening should generally be done first — restorations are colour-matched to your natural teeth and cannot be lightened afterward. Bring your timeline to your consultation and we'll build the sequence around your date.
The technology
Why professional whitening works when strips don't.
Philips Zoom is a light-activated whitening system. A 25% hydrogen peroxide gel is applied to the teeth and activated by LED light. As the gel breaks down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin and bleaches the stained substances trapped inside — while leaving the structure of the tooth unchanged.
That last part matters. Zoom lifts the stain out of the tooth. It does not remove or thin your enamel.
Over-the-counter strips use far lower peroxide concentrations, sit unevenly against the teeth, and cannot be adjusted for your specific staining or sensitivity. A professional session is supervised, evenly applied, and finished with a fluoride treatment to reduce sensitivity.

First, we check whether whitening is right for you.
Before we whiten anything, your dentist examines your teeth and gums to confirm they are healthy, and talks with you about your oral hygiene and lifestyle habits. Together you agree on the whitening approach that suits your situation.
During this evaluation we also note any existing dental work — crowns, veneers, and composite restorations do not respond to conventional whitening agents. Knowing where those are, before we start, is how we avoid a mismatched result.
Depending on the condition of your teeth and what you want to change, whitening may not be your best option. If that's the case, we'll tell you, and we'll talk through what would work better.

What happens during your whitening session.
About an hour, start to finish. Here's the sequence.

Before your session — a cleaning
We recommend a regular dental cleaning before your Zoom appointment. Whitening works on the tooth surface, so removing plaque and surface buildup first gives a more even result.

Preparation
A short preparation covers and protects your lips and gums, leaving only the teeth exposed. This is the part that keeps the gel where it belongs.

Gel and light activation
The Zoom hydrogen peroxide whitening gel is applied and works together with the Zoom light to penetrate the teeth and break up stains and discoloration. The gel stays in place for 15 minutes while the light is activated. You can relax, watch TV, or listen to music.

Repeat — three to four cycles
The gel is applied for three to four 15-minute sessions of light activation, for a total treatment time of 45 to 60 minutes.

Fluoride finish
Immediately afterward, a sensitivity-reducing fluoride paste-gel is applied to your teeth.

Your take-home kit
You'll be given a Zoom home-use touch-up kit that includes custom-fitted whitening trays, along with instructions for when and how to use it.
How to keep your results.
Whitening is not permanent, and how long your result lasts depends largely on what happens after you leave. Your take-home touch-up kit is part of the plan, not an afterthought.
- Use your Zoom touch-up kit as directed by your dentist.
- Limit or moderate staining foods and drinks — tea, coffee, red wine, cola
- Tobacco products will stain teeth even after whitening treatment. If you use them, your dentist will encourage you to stop.
- Maintain a proper brushing and flossing routine to prevent stains reforming.
- Keep up with scheduled cleanings with your dentist and hygienist.
- A whitening toothpaste may be recommended to help maintain your result.
Important considerations.
We would rather you know all of this before your appointment than after.
- Some people experience sensitivity during treatment. The Zoom light produces minimal heat, which is usually the source of any discomfort.
- Rarely, minor tingling is experienced immediately after the procedure. It always dissipates.
- Ask your dentist about an anti-sensitivity toothpaste before treatment to lessen sensitivity.
- Zoom is not recommended for children under 13 years of age, or for anyone pregnant or lactating.
- Whitening treatment may not be as effective for some people as it is for others
- Individuals with a strong gag reflex or significant dental anxiety may find the full procedure difficult. Tell us in advance and we'll discuss options.
- Only your dentist can determine whether whitening is right for you, after a thorough oral examination including a shade assessment.
